My heart sings with gratitude for Christian Science
My heart sings with gratitude for Christian Science. I was raised in Christian Science, so I experienced its healing effect throughout my childhood. During the past few years my appreciation for Science has deepened.
Over twenty years ago my mother started reading Christian Science periodicals that were brought by members of the local branch Church of Christ, Scientist, to the hospital where she was employed as a nurse. Through this literature, and the Christian Scientists she met, she became interested and began attending the local church.
Soon after this, when I first started drinking milk as an infant, I reacted with severe bronchitis and a rash that covered my body. A pediatrician informed my mother that I was allergic to milk and prescribed a medicine. My mother knew from her newfound religion that she could rely on God; so she asked a Christian Science practitioner for help through prayer. I began to breathe more easily, and my skin cleared up. I have drunk milk ever since with no ill effects. Since then we have relied solely on spiritual means for healing.
The event that caused me to make my own real commitment to Christian Science occurred during the summer of 1980. I was attending a Girl Scout camp in a nearby city. At one point during the afternoon, while I was swimming, I hit my chin on the concrete edge of the pool. I didn't feel any pain, so I kept swimming. However, when I got out of the pool I found that there was a deep cut on my chin. The counselors called my mother and took me to the nearest hospital's emergency room. My mother got in touch with a practitioner and then met me at the hospital.
We were told by a nurse that stitches would be necessary. My mother explained that we would not be seeking medical treatment. She assured the nurse that because she herself had been a medical nurse, she understood what the medical predictions were. The nurse wanted to know how I felt. My mother told me that I was old enough to make my own decision. I remember thinking that I knew Christian Science heals. In essence, that is what I told the nurse, and we left. My chin was completely healed through Christian Science.
I feel that I had a safe childhood because of what I had learned of my relationship to God through Science. I am very grateful for the buoyant calm that this Science of Christ brings to my life and the assurance that God is guiding me, and governing my experience. I give thanks for all the practitioners who are faithfully serving the Christian Science movement.
