In 1941 I attended a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, for the first time. This made such an impression on me—hearing the readings from the Bible and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and listening to the testimonies of healing—that I decided I simply must be a Christian Scientist. So it has been, and many healings have occurred along the way.

In the winter of 1987 I suffered a heavy cold with much coughing. I was taking some important classes and didn't want to miss them. As the classes were held at night, I bundled up well and went.

One morning upon waking, I began to cough in a violent manner and saw that I was spitting blood. This surprised me. I took my copy of Science and Health and began to look for something in it that would help me. I reasoned that I didn't need to be afraid because illness, in whatever form it appears, is not God-created and does not actually possess the power it may seem to have. Then I read this passage: "Let discord of every name and nature be heard no more, and let the harmonious and true sense of Life and being take possession of human consciousness." I thought deeply about this spiritual truth the next few days.
