As a young college student, newly married, I should have felt joyful about life. I "had it all"—a devoted husband, loving parents, a just-completed undergraduate degree, and active membership in a Protestant church. Why at this point in my life should I fall into a deep depression? I couldn't explain it. I sought relief with frequent trips to physicians, tranquilizers, and even a midnight visit to the emergency room of a local hospital. Nothing helped and I became more depressed, exhibiting alarming symptoms.

One morning after a very difficult, sleepless night, the thought came to me: "Go to the Christian Science Reading Room." I had heard of Christian Science from my mother, who had been somewhat interested in it. As a student of the biological sciences, I had grave doubts of the effectiveness of something called Christian Science, but in desperation I did go to the Reading Room. The librarian was very helpful. I was skeptical and asked probing questions. She talked with me and lent me a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.

I took the book back to our apartment and began to read. I remember that, as I read, it seemed as if light was filling my entire being with warmth and healing. No depression for the rest of that day! The next evening I experienced some of the old symptoms. But as I began to read Science and Health again, the symptoms vanished, never to return.
