During the months involved with the legal process of adopting our two young children, my wife and I prayed daily to better understand the spiritual significance of parenthood. During this time we witnessed a variety of healings related to our children as a result of prayer as understood in Christian Science. These healings included physical ailments that were identified on the children's previous medical records, as well as much improved attitudes and relationships between ourselves and the various social workers who helped us with the adoption procedure.
About a year after the children became a permanent part of our family, we had occasion to grow further in our understanding of God as Father-Mother, good, and as "a very present help in trouble" (Psalms). Our son, who was then about two and one half years old, had been feeling especially tired at supper one evening and was happy to go to bed earlier than usual. Several hours after the rest of the family had also retired, we were wakened by a strange sound coming from our son's bedroom. When I entered the child's room and looked in the crib, the youngster appeared unconscious.
Lifting the child from his crib, I vigorously affirmed the child's spiritual relationship to an ever-present God and his eternal, spiritual existence, untouched by any limitations of mortality. I recall feeling an earnest conviction of God's presence while praying. The truths of "the scientific statement of being" in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy also helped. This powerful statement of reality clearly establishes man's identity as spiritual, not material. As we prayed, the child became alert and regained a measure of bodily control.
