The following experience occurred while our three sons, an acquaintance, and I were sailing our sailboat up the California coast. The entire day's sail had been in a thick fog. But as we entered the San Francisco Bay through the Golden Gate Bridge at about midnight, we found the view beneath a clear, moonlit sky to be breathtaking. We were completely surrounded by sparkling lights glistening like jewels.
It was time to transfer diesel fuel from the main tanks to a day tank in order to keep the engine running for the next four-hour watch. However, we were distracted by the spectacular view and neglected to make the fuel transfer.
I had just gone below to get some rest when I heard the engine start to misfire. Realizing that the engine was starved for fuel and that a large freighter was following us, I jumped out of my bunk and ran aft to the engine compartment. Then I jumped down into the darkness and immediately started bleeding air from the fuel lines. Inadvertently I brushed up against the spinning propeller shaft; my sock got caught in a locking bolt and I was pulled into the wheel.
