Not long ago I went to lunch at a fellow Christian Scientist's home. While we were preparing our lunch, her two-year-old daughter came into the kitchen, holding a pair of very sharp scissors. I felt sure the little girl's mother would not want her to be carrying them about, so I reached out to take them from her, saying, "Oh, I don't think you should have those." Just as my hand reached the blades, the child snapped them shut onto my finger, severing the tip. I turned away and asked my friend for a napkin, which I used to wrap the finger. I felt a calm trust in God's presence.
After several minutes my friend called a Christian Science practitioner for me. The practitioner told me that I could never be severed or separated from God. This spiritual truth was just what I needed to know.
My friend and I began to pray together. We shared spiritual truths, affirming that God was right there, right then, taking care of me. Nothing can "separate us from the love of God," as Paul says in Romans. I thought then that this luncheon had been an expression of love, as had my taking the scissors away from the little girl.
