Who heals? Who can be healed?
My dad liked to tell about a Christian Science healing he experienced when he was ill during a business trip. He was in a city where he'd never been and where he didn't know anyone. He was relying on Christian Science for healing but thought he needed more help than he was feeling from his own prayer. He looked up a practitioner in the directory pages of The Christian Science Journal and made an appointment.
When he finally found the office, it was in a part of town that didn't impress him. There was no elevator in the building, and walking up five flights didn't impress him either. When he met the practitioner he wasn't any more impressed, but when he left her office he was healed.
It's not unusual for someone hearing about Christian Science for the first time to wonder what sort of person might be involved in healing through Christian Science treatment— that is, through prayer specifically applied to someone's illness or need. How old would such a person be? How would he or she look? What kind of demeanor would he or she have?
