Seven years ago my husband passed on unexpectedly
Seven years ago my husband passed on unexpectedly. I was devastated. My world seemed to have collapsed, and I could see no purpose in living. As the weeks passed, grief, fear, and depression bombarded my days. I lost my strength and ability to make decisions. However, I continued deep and persistent study of the Bible together with Science and Health and Mrs. Eddy's other writings. I knew that when I was a university student and later a schoolteacher, Christian Science had been a wonderful help to me and had brought some outstanding results.
One evening I prayed that God would show me my purpose in life, what to do and how to do it. The thought came that my purpose in life was twofold—to serve and love God and to serve and love my fellowman. That answer was a turning point.
The following morning I studied, as usual, "A Rule for Motives and Acts" from the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy. It states: "Neither animosity nor mere personal attachment should impel the motives or acts of the members of The Mother Church. In Science, divine Love alone governs man; and a Christian Scientist reflects the sweet amenities of Love, in rebuking sin, in true brotherliness, charitableness, and forgiveness. The members of this Church should daily watch and pray to be delivered from all evil, from prophesying, judging, condemning, counseling, influencing or being influenced erroneously." The words "personal attachment" and "divine Love alone governs man" stood out from the page. I realised that I must not rely on any person to work out my troubles but that I had to turn completely to divine Love to meet my needs.
