As a lifelong student of Christian Science, I know that my expression of gratitude for what a more spiritual understanding of God has done for me and mine is long overdue. Though I have experienced many healings, one healing stands out to me because of the lesson I learned from it.

For over a month I woke up every morning so stiff that I could hardly get out of bed or turn my head. Moses called the children of Israel a stiff-necked people because of their rebelliousness (see Deuteronomy), so I reasoned that to be stiff-necked was to resist the Truth. I knew the truth was that God hadn't stopped being God, nor had man stopped being God's image, which is man's true identity. I knew God, good, could never include evil; therefore, this condition couldn't be something that really belonged to me or that I had to get rid of.

As I prayed diligently, this verse in Psalms came to me: "Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck." Mrs. Eddy states in Miscellaneous Writings: "One can never go up, until one has gone down in his own esteem. Humility is lens and prism to the understanding of Mind-healing; it must be had to understand our textbook; it is indispensable to personal growth, and points out the chart of its divine Principle and rule of practice." I saw that by looking for a personally mental cause for the difficulty, I was believing that I could be the cause of discord—that I could create something that God did not create! I felt a deep sense of relief, and I thanked God for His angel message. I knew God is the only creator. The condition soon disappeared.
