Individuals change the course of world thinking
We all marvel at the remarkable changes that are taking place on the world stage these days. This century will probably write into history such names as Sakharov, Mandela, Havel, and other individuals who have tipped the scales toward greater freedom for mankind and changed the course of world thinking.
History shows that what is worthwhile and progressive in society depends largely on the thinking and actions of individuals. It takes immense courage and tenacity for one person to face persecution, rejection, and the threat of death to advance the human condition.
For example, the Right Rev. Laszlo Tökes, a Hungarian Reformed Church pastor, who has lived in Romania all his life, kept the Christian faith of his parishioners alight in the darkest days of state persecution in his country. We read in People, February 5, 1990, that Tökes says, "Our church has an ancient revolutionary tradition: We think to protest is the very essence of the word Protestant." Tökes is now the Protestant Bishop of Oradea.
