I am very thankful that my parents enrolled me as a child in a Christian Science Sunday School. This foundation in Truth is the most important thing they could have given me. It carried me through all the vicissitudes of childhood and brought healings of such things as severe earaches and a fractured skull; it then was my firm support and protection in the United States Navy when I was away from home for the first time.

About six years before I retired, I began to experience lower back pain so intense that lying in bed at night seemed like torture at times. I worked as a letter carrier, which entailed a lot of walking, carrying, and lifting, and I had doubts as to whether I could continue. I feared I would have to quit before my regular retirement.

I had been praying to realize my true nature as God's image, but I couldn't seem to overcome the pain. I was struggling through each day, until finally I didn't think I could go on. At this point I called a Christian Science practitioner for prayerful help. I was striving to look beyond what the material senses were claiming and was reaching out for a greater sense of the Father's love.
