Spiritual talent

One year during my teaching career, I was asked to coach field hockey. It had been a long time since I played the game myself at school, so my pupils and I started learning the basic positions and strokes together. At first we executed them with a degree of clumsiness and timidity, but we all encouraged each other, and when any of the pupils hit a good ball I was always enthusiastic with my praise! Soon our team was ready to go out and play matches with other local schools.

Every learning situation has its challenges and rewards, but with a sympathetic teacher in charge we often exceed our own expectations and find the joy of work well done.

Christ Jesus was an exemplary teacher. He illustrated what he taught with everyday things: the birds and fish, flowers and mustard seeds, and, most important, with his life. In a parable recorded in Matthew's Gospel, the Master showed the value of the talents, or capacities, that God, our Father, gives to each of us.
