I have been a student of Christian Science since my early teens when I first went to a Christian Science Sunday School. Through the intervening years I have had a number of healings as a result of the spiritual understanding I have gained through the study of Christian Science. These healings have helped me realize the essentially transitory nature of disease and of evil, and this understanding gave me the equanimity to pray calmly when I experienced a stroke in December of 1986.

I was in the kitchen bending over when I realized I was not able to speak, though I attempted it over and over. I also realized I could not straighten up; and I moved in that manner from the kitchen into the dining room, where I eased myself into a chair and sat. I recognized at that point that I was having a stroke. It was a startling experience, but I was not greatly fearful because of the understanding of man's spiritual perfection that I had gained in Christian Science.

I began to pray immediately, mentally pondering statements of truth from the Bible and the writings of Mrs. Eddy. I was aware of medical beliefs about strokes; and I knew I had to look beyond mere human opinions and information and align my thoughts with divine Mind in order to hear the healing Truth. In that regard I remembered this statement from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 390): "Meet the incipient stages of disease with as powerful mental opposition as a legislator would employ to defeat the passage of an inhuman law."
