I am deeply grateful for parents who were so open-minded that they accepted Christian Science when it was offered to them. As a young woman, my mother was discontented with religion. Not long after marrying my father, she looked up at the stars one night and prayed to God, "Well, if You do exist, I wish You would reveal Yourself to me."

Soon after that a neighbor gave my mother a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. When she read the chapter titled "Fruitage," which relates healings of many serious conditions that were accomplished just by reading the book, she said, "That's what religion ought to be." My wife and I now have three children and nine grandchildren, and we are all Christian Scientists.

At one time I developed a severe case of flu. One evening I took my Bible and sat down to study. Two verses in Psalm 51 stood out to me. Verse 7 says: "Purge me with hyssop [an herb symbolizing purification], and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow." And verse 10 states: "Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me."
