What does it mean to have Soul?
In the mail not long ago we received a copy of a Sunday School assignment from an eight-year-old boy. His teacher had asked him to write about his understanding of God as divine Soul. With careful thought the youngster put down on paper some of the things he knew firsthand from his own experience that could help describe what Soul means to him.
He wrote quite a long list. He told of how he was reminded of Soul by the stars on a clear night and by "cool water splashing against your face" and by a great big tree and a dandelion field and the sun's warmth. There were other things too—qualities—that helped the boy explain what Soul means to him. He wrote of beauty and grace, intelligence, love, and peace. His list continued down the page and finally ended with something special to him—a hug and a kiss.
For this boy, to have Soul is to know all the happy feelings in all those things he had written about. Divine Soul made him feel good and free and loved—like a hug and a kiss.
