My parents were of another faith when I was a year old

My parents were of another faith when I was a year old. At that time, I am told, I developed an acute mastoid condition in one ear. The physician who examined me said that an operation must take place the next day. He also warned my parents that it was an extremely serious operation for one so young.

My aunt was, by then, an earnest student of Christian Science. Until this threat to their baby's health, my parents had been violently opposed to changing their religious views. In Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy quotes the familiar saying (p. 266) "Man's extremity is God's opportunity." Now my parents not only allowed my aunt to bring a Christian Science practitioner to my bedside, they vowed that if I was healed, they would also take up the study of Science.

The practitioner came at once. Through his prayer my parents' fear was alleviated. The practitioner continued to pray with my parents, and he helped them to see that God's care is immediately available. By morning the mastoid condition had totally disappeared. I was fully healed.
