My parents first heard about Christian Science when I was a small child. I had been under a doctor's care for a severe case of influenza. There was no improvement, so when a friend who was a Christian Scientist suggested that my parents ask a Christian Science practitioner for help through prayer, medical treatment was discontinued.
I will never forget the love expressed to me by the practitioner. She told me that as God's beloved child I was free from sickness at that very moment. I responded to this expression of Christly love. In a few days the symptoms completely vanished and I was well. As a result of this healing, my parents became active and devoted students of Christian Science.
As I look back on this experience with a deep feeling of gratitude, I am reminded of a statement in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 454): "Love for God and man is the true incentive in both healing and teaching." Divine Love has sustained me through the years. Christ Jesus performed his healing works based on divine Love. He said (John 15:9), "As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love."
