There is, I feel, a simple prayer that goes on almost universally. It is often voiced in three words, "God, help me!" Such a prayer, when it is undergirded with a spiritual understanding of Him, recognizes that He is the ever-present source of help for all mankind. The teachings of Christian Science offer us this understanding; they explain the nature of God and reveal to us His power on earth.
The purpose of this testimony, however, is not to give an explanation of God. That may be found in what seems to me to be the most God-centered book written in this age, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. The purpose of this testimony is to relate the events surrounding my simple prayer on one occasion—"God, help me!"
After the members of my immediate family died at an advanced age, the isolation seemed too much to face. I didn't care if I lived or died. In fact, when I asked for prayerful help at times from a Christian Science practitioner, I really seemed not to care if I was healed or not!
