The Bible was seldom quoted in our family, but family adages and aphorisms abounded.
When I was about ten I ran excitedly to my mother to tell her a compliment someone had paid me. Her response was, "Remember, dear, beauty is in the eye of the beholder." While I was trying to figure out that remark, my grandmother, nodding approval at my mother, offered this one: "Yes, child, beauty is only skin deep. Beauty is as beauty does."
