Freedom from pain
The tyranny of pain can be broken. The way to freedom is found through God's power.
One afternoon, when I was helping a young child to get out of the path of an oncoming car in a parking lot, I fell and sustained a painful injury to my ankle. I was instantly overwhelmed with fear—especially because I had an important activity in the very near future, and it was vital to me that I be in top shape for it. This concern filled my thought, and I couldn't seem to think beyond the fear and frustration. By the time we got home the ankle was badly swollen as well as increasingly painful. I literally cried with pain over this unhappy state of affairs.
My husband, who had observed the entire experience, sat down by me and lovingly but very firmly suggested that I remember that I had a choice about how I could handle the situation.
This startled me and got my attention. The last thing I felt at that point was that I had any choice in the matter. I felt victimized and resented the injustice of this imposition on my harmony (and the interruption of my schedule).
