I first heard of Christian Science after an alarming physical condition had developed that had been diagnosed as a tumorous growth. This had been surgically removed, but serious aftereffects prompted me to confide in a relative who, I had recently learned, was a Christian Scientist. I was told that Christian Science was a healing religion, and after one discussion with this relative the trouble cleared up completely. I was very eager to learn more about this Science.

Various difficulties over the years have caused me to look more deeply into Science, and this has brought about spiritual progress, or awakening. From the time I was in my late teens I would occasionally experience extreme pain in the lower part of my body. Usually this would happen at night and wake me from a sound sleep. I would read from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy until the pain stopped. Later I learned to work mentally, metaphysically, as Science and Health instructs (p. 421): "Insist vehemently on the great fact which covers the whole ground, that God, Spirit, is all, and that there is none beside Him." The condition stopped occurring, and the difficulty was healed.

Looking back over the experience, I am reminded of this statement in Science and Health (p. 574): "The very circumstance, which your suffering sense deems wrathful and afflictive, Love can make an angel entertained unawares." I realize now that this experience impelled spiritual awakening that made me more consciously aware of God's presence and power. For this I am extremely grateful.
