To have been raised in Christian Science from...
To have been raised in Christian Science from the age of eight has been a great blessing for me. Although as a youngster I resisted the good Christian Science offered, as an adult it was not long before I began to study the writings of Mary Baker Eddy—including Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures—and to attend a branch church regularly. My commitment to Christian Science was made after Science had healed me of a serious ailment. This healing, which was published in the Sentinel many years ago, has remained permanent.
During the years since my first healing there have been many other healings and blessings for me and my family. I relied fully on this teaching in raising our two boys. There were healings of earaches, colds, measles, effects of accidents, skin difficulties, and other troubles. Both boys attended a Christian Science Sunday School regularly and worked out many challenges on their own. Although my husband was not a Christian Scientist, he never objected to our depending on God for healing. I have found that with each healing I have gained a better sense of my true spiritual selfhood.
About eleven years ago I began to feel very weak and continuously nervous. It was completely unlike me to be that way. I lost a great deal of weight and could eat very little. One of the most frightening aspects of this problem was that I would wake early every morning, shaking all over. When this happened I would immediatedly start to pray. Often a hymn from the Christian Science Hymnal would come to me, and I would quietly sing until the symptoms subsided.
