Men at times have tried to answer the question "Just how tough am I?" In years past I was involved in university athletics, foreign lands construction projects, wartime service in the Marine Corps, exploratory work in the Arctic, and other activities—all necessitating great physical endurance. Despite my study of Christian Science in the years that followed, I clung to the belief that human strength and physical conditioning are determining factors in good health.
Several years after I had class instruction in Christian Science, an affliction came upon me in the form of an infection in one leg. Bedridden for a month and not without pain, I nevertheless seemed most bothered by the fact that such a situation was even confronting me—this so-called all-American boy! My wounded pride seemed more "painful" than the physical challenge! I actually felt embarrassed to be in such a fix.
In receiving prayerful help from a Christian Science practitioner for an improved sense of true strength, I was able to see that Truth is ever present, without fluctuation. In the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, we find these statements (p. 420): "There is no metastasis, no stoppage of harmonious action, no paralysis. Truth not error, Love not hate, Spirit not matter, governs man." This helped me understand that the congestion of fluid in my leg was actually a mental claim rather than a material or physical condition.
