As a child I attended a Christian Science Sunday School, and with the support of my family and the prayers of a Christian Science practitioner I had many healings and instances of protection. However, as I grew older I drifted from the standards of this teaching. Then, during my mid-twenties, I really began to make Christian Science my own.

At that time I felt a deep desire to rely fully on God in all aspects of my life and to shed quickly habits not compatible with Christian Science. These habits included social drinking and loose morals, which I had indulged in during my college years. Following that spiritual reawakening and my healing of these indulgences, I had many opportunities to practice this Science and to learn more of man's true relationship to God.

Four years later I was living in a country where there were less than a handful of Christian Scientists sprinkled in various regions. One afternoon while I was playing sports I took a fall. There was a loud "snap," pain, and evidence of a gap in my anklebone.
