I am told that in the early 1900s my aunt was quickly healed of an abscess through prayer in Christian Science. Previously, in three consecutive years she had been operated on for this condition; the third operation involved the removal of a breast. When the abscess appeared a fourth time my aunt was so discouraged that she asked a friend, who was a Christian Scientist, if she thought she could be healed by having Christian Science treatment. Her friend answered in the affirmative. My aunt then visited a Christian Science practitioner. Later that day, while preparing for bed, my aunt noticed that there was no trace of the abscess. In fact, it never reappeared. She had been fully healed. Because of this healing my grandmother, mother, two aunts, and an uncle became Christian Scientists, and all were active in church work.
When I was two years old, I have been told, I became very ill. A doctor was called at the request of my father, who was not a Christian Scientist. The doctor diagnosed the condition as pneumonia and double mastoiditis. He said that to make the fever drop it would be necessary to lance both my ears. This was done, but the fever did not subside.
My mother then asked my father if she might call a Christian Science practitioner and have Science help for me instead of further medical attention. At that point my father readily agreed. That night, while the practitioner was praying for me, both my ears opened and drained and my temperature returned to normal. Within a short time I was well.
