During the Second World War, I took up the study of Christian Science

During the Second World War, I took up the study of Christian Science. Prior to my beginning this study, my husband had been drafted into the infantry, and his unit was serving under General Patton during the big sweep across Europe. It seemed that every radio broadcast detailed the casualties and fatalities both sides were encountering. I was very fearful.

At the time we had a thirteen-month-old son, and the two of us lived in a small apartment complex. At the height of the war the apartment building was sold, and I received an eviction notice. I was frantic. There was no place for us to go, as housing was extremely scarce. No building was going on. Everything was geared for wartime production.

In my desperation I would worry about my husband's being on the front lines, and the next moment I would fret about where our son and I could move. Every time the doorbell rang, I feared it was a telegram from the War Department telling me my husband was missing in action. Added to this there had been no mail from the front lines in several months. One week I lost many pounds from worry. It was then that I cried out to God with all my heart to show me the way.
