In the Preface to Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy we read...
In the Preface to Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy we read (p. vii): "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." I have found that this is true, and that the more I lean on the infinite, the more support I get.
This support was something I very much needed when my husband, who was not a Christian Scientist, was operated on for a tumor on his spine. After the operation I spoke to the neurosurgeon, who indicated that my husband would likely suffer the same symptoms in six months' time. He added that a second operation would then be necessary and would involve the removal of part of my husband's spine.
After hearing this I turned to "the sustaining infinite" and did a great deal of praying and studying of all Mrs. Eddy's writings. I also read the Christian Science periodicals. This prayer and study was inspiring, and it brought me much comfort.
Several months later, while we were on our summer vacation, the symptoms reappeared and we returned home. My husband telephoned the doctor, but he was out of town. I then encouraged him to call a Christian Science practitioner for help through prayer, which he did. By that time my husband was using two canes to get around. He visited the practitioner three times over a period of three weeks. He then discarded the canes and enjoyed many active years, carrying on his business. Needless to say, the second operation was not necessary as my husband had been completely healed.
I have experienced and witnessed many healings over the years, including the healing of broken bones that were protruding from my foot. These healings came about by relying entirely on God.
Christian Science was a wonderful help to me in bringing up my son. On one occasion I was wakened by his screams. When I went to him he said, "My ears, my ears." I tried to quiet his fear with statements of spiritual Truth, but the screams continued. I then sat by his bed and sang a lovely hymn with words by Mrs. Eddy. It begins (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 207), "O gentle presence, peace and joy and power." I earnestly claimed each word to be the truth of my son's real being. Finally, he quieted down and fell asleep. I went back to bed. In the morning, when I went to wake him, I noticed that his pillow was soaking wet. During the night his ears had drained, and he woke perfectly well. He went off to school as usual.
Later on, when my son was in boarding school, the school nurse called one day to say that he had contracted mumps. (As a child I had had an instantaneous healing of mumps after a doctor had told my mother that I had the worst case of mumps he had ever seen.) I thanked the nurse and prayerfully affirmed that God did not know anything about mumps; therefore, His idea, man, could not manifest such a condition. The nurse called the next morning to say that two doctors had just examined my son and found no trace of mumps.
No words could adequately express my gratitude for Christian Science.

I am happy to verify the healings my mother has mentioned, and to confirm the fact that my stepfather enjoyed many active years after his healing.
