By the time I was a young woman, I had experienced many blessings by turning to God in Christian Science. But when it came to marriage, I managed to convince myself that I didn't need God's help. At one point I felt sure that I had found the right partner all by myself. Though my friends said little, they did not seem to share my view of this fellow. When I recognized this, I used all the human arguments I could muster to convince them of the rightness of my choice.

Because of schooling and business matters involving my husband-to-be, our marriage was delayed for a time. Then finally we were able to make plans for the wedding. A few months before, I went shopping for linens. I brought them home and kneeled down to place them in the cedar chest when suddenly I earnestly prayed, "Not my will, but thine, be done" (Luke 22:42). I realized then that true companionship is our oneness with divine Love. (I was beginning to understand that God, Love, governs all.) I really let go of my own plans and determination for the marriage at that point, and for the first time I sought divine guidance.

This letting go of personal plans opened the door to concrete proof of God's loving companionship. One week later I met the man who became my husband. There was no doubt in my mind that he was the right one. (My former fiance later was happily married.)
