My gratitude for Christian Science has widened...

My gratitude for Christian Science has widened and deepened during many years of traveling around the world as a newspaper correspondent. I am thankful that I have been able to turn to divine Love, Principle, as infinite, all-powerful God, good, wherever I have been. As a result, Christian Science has been more than a constant companion; it has been my salvation, time and time again.

No matter how bleak the circumstances, the teachings and example of Christ Jesus and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy have revealed qualities of truth I could hold to and be grateful for. I am continually struck by the calm and settledness brought by turning to the truth when traveling, or when human conditions argue that staying calm and open to harmony are the hardest things to achieve.

After living for several years in a country with a totalitarian government, I found myself grappling with what began as a chest cold and worsened into what I believe would be called pleurisy. My wife and I prayed steadfastly but for more than a week I could hardly breathe, I could not lie down, and I was unable to sleep or eat properly. At times I felt tempted to believe that anything, even giving up, would be preferable.
