I am very grateful for the healings I have had through the study and practice of Christian Science. My first healing occurred over twenty-five years ago, before I became a student of Science. I had been a registered nurse and midwife in England before coming to this country in 1950. At the time of this healing I was working as a public health nurse in Chicago, visiting families in a certain district.

One day during my daily round of visits, I stopped on the street to talk with a mother. On leaving her, I stepped backward into a coverless manhole that I had not seen. My right leg went down and I fell very heavily, hitting the base of my spine on the metal rim around the top of the manhole. After I had been helped up, I felt very shaken. Yet I made my way back to our headquarters, several blocks away. On my arrival there I almost lost consciousness.

A colleague who was a nurse took me by taxi to the nearest hospital, where I was examined by a doctor. I was black and blue from the waist down and had a large hematoma. The doctor advised that I spend the night in the hospital, so that they could try to relieve the swelling. However, as there was no bed available, I was told to go home and return the next morning for an X-ray. I was given no medication at the hospital.
