My mother began studying Christian Science during my childhood...
My mother began studying Christian Science during my childhood, but because of strong opposition within the family it was never discussed in our home. Later, when I left home to train as a teacher, I decided to attend a Christian Science Sunday School to find out something about Science for myself. I began attending, and although I can remember coming away each week feeling joyful and uplifted, I didn't really understand what I was being taught, nor did I think I was ready to meet the demands Science was making on me. So I soon stopped going.
Twelve years elapsed before I returned to Christian Science. At that time I was suffering with rheumatoid arthritis. The diagnosis was frightening to me and my husband; at his suggestion I had visited a doctor. I had been given a blood test, and I had been told to take two aspirin, four times a day.
Although I had not been brought up a Christian Scientist, I certainly had not been brought up to rely on drugs. So I decided not to return to find out the results of the blood test, and I threw away the aspirin. Instead I began to read a book about health and healing. When my mother learned of my situation, she recommended I read Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.
