It had been a very rough year for my husband...

It had been a very rough year for my husband and me. After graduating from law school he had been unable to find suitable employment, despite months of searching. I was a lifelong Christian Scientist, and my husband was a new student of this teaching. He had just submitted his application for membership to The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. It was at that time in our lives that we had a most concrete example of God's tender, ministering care.

While crossing a busy street one night on my way home from work, I was struck by a car and thrown several feet. I have no memory of the accident and was first informed of its occurrence when I became conscious in an ambulance. The attending paramedic gently asked me not to move, adding that I had been critically injured and that they were fighting for my life. Immediately I reached out to God, and the inward spiritual response was "You're not fighting for life! God is your Life, and you will live to benefit His Cause." Just that quickly I glimpsed that my purpose for living was to express God, and that since my true source, God, had not stopped, I could not either. I rested with this truth, unafraid for my life and remaining clearly alert, although I could not speak.

After my arrival at a local hospital, my husband was notified. He immediately called a Christian Science practitioner. Upon reaching the hospital, my husband received the doctor's diagnosis: bruised limbs, disfigured face, signs of internal bleeding, and a possible critical head injury. A neurosurgeon had been called by the hospital staff and was on standby to perform emergency brain surgery should my symptoms worsen.
