Often in my late teens I felt unwell
Often in my late teens I felt unwell. I paid many visits to a doctor, who could find nothing wrong with me but commented to my mother that all I suffered from was the fear of being ill! I was also lacking in confidence. However, we had known of Christian Science, and as soon as I began to read Christian Science literature, including the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, the fear of illness was overcome. Later I became a member of a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, and of The Mother Church, and eventually I had the privilege of Christian Science class instruction.
During a period of about thirty-five years I had no serious physical difficulties to meet. I gained in confidence and had a very happy life, which included mastering a demanding job. Then, soon after I retired, my mother passed on. We had been quite close. But as a result of prayer I was immediately lifted above all sense of grief.
A formidable challenge came about five years ago when I began to experience pain in various parts of my body. The condition was not diagnosed, but it appeared to be severe arthritis. I lost weight and was unable to sit or stand for any length of time without discomfort. I was also unable to turn my head.
