I wish to express my particular gratitude for the provision...
I wish to express my particular gratitude for the provision made by our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for the establishing of Christian Science Reading Rooms. At a time when I was residing in an overseas country, nothing seemed to be going right in my life. There were certain forms of behavior in that society which I could not make myself accept. As a result I found myself the object of quite a bit of criticism. It seemed as though no one cared for me.
I was frustrated to the extent of considering psychiatric help, when by chance I happened on a Christian Science Reading Room in the same edifice as the local branch church. I went in, not knowing exactly what I was seeking. The attendant showed me how to read the Bible Lesson (outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly), which I did. I cannot remember anything I read beyond one word, which stood out. That word was "love." I was soon put in touch with a Christian Science practitioner. She was a very dynamic and vivacious individual, who spoke to me of God's love for His children, of which I was one. I came out of that visit a new man.
The following week I was involved in an automobile accident. Fortunately none of the children I was taking to school were injured. I was so new to Christian Science that I did not know that the effects of accident could be annulled through prayer. In that country an auto accident is considered to be very serious. I was taken to the local police station. My wife notified my office. Of the thirty-five people who worked in that sales office, it seems that all took time off to help me in my predicament. Some called lawyers, others called politicians or other people of influence. All the time I was at the police station, someone from the office was with me. Finally the judge's verdict was that I would have to buy the car belonging to the other person involved in the accident.
