I am very grateful for a healing I had when I was a new student of Christian Science.
For years I had a painful condition in my spine that would incapacitate me for days. Seeking prayerful help, I went to see a Christian Science practitioner. I told her that I couldn't help feeling I was a mere mortal with a very serious physical problem, and during our conversation I kept reiterating this in different ways. Finally the practitioner said that if that was what I was—a mortal with a problem—even if I was healed of the problem, I would still be a mortal, just fettered by another problem! She helped me see that in the light of the teachings of Christian Science, I could find a more substantial premise and a more productive use of the pronoun "I."
She opened the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and read this (p. 478): "Error says, 'I am man;' but this belief is mortal and far from actual." She turned to page 249 and continued reading: "The I is Spirit." Then she recommended that I take that mortal "I" and throw it out of my consciousness —my past, present, and future—and let the "I" that is Spirit be expressed in me. As the Bible puts it (Phil. 2:5): "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus." Then I saw that I could look throughout the expansive universe of the infinite I AM and see how wonderful my real identity—how wonderful God's idea, man—is. As there is nothing to a mirrored image but that which the image reflects, so man, God's image, reflects Spirit, God, good.
