"Be renewed in the spirit of your mind"
When we turn in prayer to God, our basic objective should be to learn to love Him and our fellowmen more, and to express God's qualities more in our daily lives. If, however, our primary objective is to better our human condition—to enjoy an easier life in matter—we are likely to be disappointed with the results of our prayer.
We learn in Christian Science that God is divine Mind and that the real universe and real man, as created by God, are perfect and spiritual. God is infinite, eternal good; and because man is created in God's image and likeness, man reflects the infinite goodness and harmony of God. To believe that man is a material being and therefore subject to disease, lack, and discord is to accept the false, mortal concept of man. To know that man is the perfect, spiritual, and loved child of God is to know the truth of man. This truth frees us from the problems and fear inherent in the false concept. By this fundamental change of consciousness we begin to be spiritually renewed.
When through prayer we become increasingly receptive and obedient to divine Mind, the spiritual ideas we need come into our consciousness, and they in turn guide us to the right decisions in our careers, in our family and social life. As we spiritually progress, holding to the loving, law-abiding, and intelligent ideas of divine Mind, our daily lives become more meaningful and satisfying. In Ecclesiastes we read, "God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy." Eccl. 2:26.
