Years ago, in order to attend a camp, I was required to submit a statement of good health signed by a doctor. Therefore I underwent a medical examination. After this exam I was told that I had serious heart trouble. While the diagnosis was very upsetting, it was not a complete surprise, because I had been experiencing some symptoms consistent with it.
At the time, I was regularly attending a Christian Science Sunday School. My parents were in agreement with my having Christian Science treatment. The next day an appointment was made for me to visit a Christian Science practitioner, and on my own I traveled to his downtown office via public transportation.
This kind man offered me a chair facing him as he sat behind his desk. He asked me several questions about myself, including these: Had I learned in Sunday School that I was really God's perfect child, created in His image and likeness (see Gen. 1:26), and did I understand what that meant? I thought about this for only an instant and answered with a confident yes! Then he assured me that at that moment I was free. He grasped my hand in a warm, firm handshake. I felt as if a gigantic weight had been lifted from my shoulders. The dark, fearful sentence of a life of reduced activity and of short duration had vanished instantaneously!
