I came to know of Christian Science when I was very young. A very dear relative, who saw that I was ill, took me to a Christian Science practitioner. Through the practitioner's prayer I was healed of a lung ailment and of a painful cyst. Yet I did not really understand anything of this wonderful Science. And despite these lovely healings, I did not begin studying Christian Science.

Many years went by before the seed of spiritual truth, sown in my thought at the time of those healings, germinated. One day I was told that a grandson of mine was very sick, and that he would have to be held in our arms through the night. According to the doctor, if we put the child to bed, we would be running the risk of asphyxiation. When it was my turn to hold the child, I remembered that I had learned a passage, "the scientific statement of being," found in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. It concludes (p. 468): "Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual." I prayed and pondered the statement all night. My fear was healed.

When the doctor came the next day, he told the child's mother that the boy was out of danger. He also said that the situation had been very serious, since few babies survived that sickness. Out of supreme gratitude, I dedicated myself totally to the consecrated study of Christian Science.
