My husband and I were vacationing in Atlantic Canada last...
My husband and I were vacationing in Atlantic Canada last summer, and while we were there, five thousand miles from home, he very suddenly became ill and passed away.
When this happened I prayed to God for support and guidance. I did not want to allow myself to drop down into the depths of grief and despair. As I listened for an answer to my prayer, these words came to thought: "... strong faith or spiritual strength wrestles and prevails through the understanding of God." I recognized this phrase as coming from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. [The entire sentence on page 567 reads: "Truth and Love come nearer in the hour of woe, when strong faith or spiritual strength wrestles and prevails through the understanding of God."] I clung to this statement and turned it over and over in my mind. Its truth brought immediate comfort and later sustained me while the necessary arrangements were made. I also got in touch with my daughter and son-in-law.
The first opportunity I had, I turned to our precious textbook and found the passage referred to. The paragraph begins on page 566 and is part of Mrs. Eddy's explanation of these verses from the Bible—in the book of Revelation (12:7, 8): "And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven." Mrs. Eddy writes (Science and Health, pp. 566–567): "Michael's characteristic is spiritual strength. He leads the hosts of heaven against the power of sin, Satan, and fights the holy wars. Gabriel has the more quiet task of imparting a sense of the ever-presence of ministering Love. These angels deliver us from the depths."
