I have had the privilege of being a lifelong student of Christian Science, and I have always been grateful for the fact that I grew up in a family where medical theories and opinions were discounted.
An early physical challenge was a chronic condition of recurring severe headaches. Over the years the attacks modified some-what, but it was not until one particular day that I was completely healed. I was sitting on the top deck of a bus in Manchester, awaiting its departure, when an attack came, tempting me to hurriedly leave the bus. However, I held my ground, stayed in my seat, and silently refuted the lie of pain. This rejection of the error broke the mesmerism, and I have remained free from headaches ever since. That was many years ago.
In 1961 I became aware of an abnormal condition between my shoulders that caused swelling. I commenced to pray about this, but after some days I sought the prayerful help of a Christian Science practitioner, who lovingly supported me for the next few months. We were in touch almost daily by telephone. The condition had been discharging, heavily at times, but I continued with my job as a departmental manager and with my duties as First Reader in my branch Church of Christ, Scientist.
After a while it seemed timely for me to continue praying on my own. Gradually the discharging and other symptoms subsided and finally ceased. One day at home, after I had had a bath, I realized that whatever had been there had come cleanly away. Full healing was soon evident.
In retrospect, I realize how grateful I am for a number of things, including the purification of thought that was required to accomplish this healing. I also proved for myself that there is no ineradicable disease. As we read in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (pp. 288–289), "The eternal Truth destroys what mortals seem to have learned from error, and man's real existence as a child of God comes to light."
