Abundance in daily life

The desire for an abundant life is a natural one, since abundance implies expansion, growth, provision—and for the spiritally-minded, extended opportunities to serve and bless mankind. Just as a reservoir must overflow into channels provided for the distribution of water to arid areas, so the demonstration of abundance in any area of one's life should result in a constant overflow of good, directed toward the betterment of the world in general.

Linked to the true concept of abundance is sharing, the enhancing of the good of others, and the conviction of enduring plenty. A permanent sense of abundance, however, can never be attained by starting from the basis of matter as substance, for matter, even when pictured at its best, conveys limitation. To regard supply as material puts it in the category of things that perish, things that have no lasting value and are at the mercy of circumstances, personal whims, unforeseen events.

Many have had sad experiences that have borne this out. Perhaps a home built up through years of effort has been destroyed. Or a flourishing business has failed, apparently because of circumstances beyond the owner's control, and he has been faced with a financial crisis. Or perhaps ill health has supervened where there had been abundant health and usefulness.
