Who's in charge of your business?
Who is in charge here? Who is running my business? As a business executive, I might be tempted to feel that I am, that I have a tight grip on the reins and am in complete control. But as a Christian Scientist, I try to realize that the business, its employees, the customers and suppliers, and I are all really governed by one Mind: God.
Is it ignoble or demeaning to admit that God directs the affairs of business? As business men and women we may take pride in our ability to manage ... until something goes wrong! Then we start finding excuses, usually blaming someone or something that we cannot be held accountable for, never realizing that we are really in control of our responsibilities only when God controls us.
We can demonstrate that God is present and active in every aspect of our lives, including our business activities. Christian Science shows us how to trust in God more than in human skills, so that we are blessed by His invariable goodness and witness His constant, loving care of our affairs. "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." Prov. 3:5, 6. This Bible passage has always been good moral advice and very comforting in times of crisis, but I have also found it to be a sound business practice. The demonstration of God's direction in business is a constant source of amazement, continuity, abundance, and gratification to me.
