Man—"the 'male and female' of God's creating"

"Let the 'male and female' of God's creating appear." Science and Health, p. 249. This arresting statement in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy can have a special significance to each one of us. Individuals throughout the world are struggling to better understand their own identity and to find a way to come to grips with the age-old challenge of male and female roles in society. How helpful the metaphysics of Christian Science can be in providing answers. Christian Science shows us our true identity—what each one of us truly is as man, God's image, the male and female of God's creating.

To understand man's genuine identity, however, we must first understand man's creator, God. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health, "Because of human ignorance of the divine Principle, Love, the Father of all is represented as a corporeal creator; hence men recognize themselves as merely physical, and are ignorant of man as God's image or reflection and of man's eternal incorporeal existence." Ibid., p. 13.

God is not a material being, an enlarged corporeal person composed of physical characteristics. God is divine Principle, Love, Spirit, the one Mind. He is incorporeal, wholly good, and omnipresent. Christian Science reveals God as Father-Mother because He is the creator of man and the divine Principle of all that really exists.
