Some thirty-five years ago my life was saved by Christian Science
Some thirty-five years ago my life was saved by Christian Science. I had undergone an emergency abdominal operation and was in serious condition. The doctors had given up hope for my recovery. One evening an aunt, who was a student of Christian Science, came and spent the night at my bedside praying for me. In the morning the affected organs assumed their natural functions, contrary to medical expectations. Eventually I was fully healed, and about a year after that experience I took up the study of this Science. Other healings have followed.
While I was crossing a busy street in Durban one day I fell, landing heavily on my knees and hands. The traffic waited as I got up and limped to the sidewalk. The pain was intense, so I silently and thoughtfully repeated "the scientific statement of being" from page 468 of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, which begins: "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all."
By the time I had considered this statement a second time, the pain had eased. However, I was still limping. The suggestion came, "Better look to see what has happened." But I silently insisted, "Nothing has happened, because I can't fall from divine Mind. In reality, I am not a mortal but an immortal, spiritual idea of Mind." As I continued on to my car I said to myself, "Walk properly; there is no need to limp." And then I was able to walk normally to the car. On arriving home, I cleaned the knee with cold water, as it had been bleeding, and put on fresh stockings. After lunch I completed the work and shopping that had to be done. Although the left ankle and knee were swollen that night, by the morning all swelling had gone and I was free.
