One of our Bible Lessons found in the Christian Science Quarterly is titled "God the Preserver of Man." Study of this lesson has impelled me to give this testimony, for I have received proof that God does indeed preserve man. In the Bible we read (Ps. 30:3), "O Lord, thou hast brought up my soul from the grave: thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit." I have experienced the fulfilling of this promise in my life.

Eight years ago I was ready to go down to the pit. I was in a failing marriage, and my efforts to be supportive of my spouse were fruitless. Having been divorced before, I was willing to sink into the depths with him rather than admit to the world another failure. Then a terrible shock came. My husband abandoned me, leaving behind a business and mounds of personal and business debts.

I was totally devastated, emotionally and financially. An attempt to take my life was thwarted by the appearance of the police. There I was at the bottom of the pit. For four years I struggled to climb out of the depths financially, after suffering the humiliation and degradation of filing for personal bankruptcy. During this period I prayed continuously to be relieved of this mortal sense of existence. In fact, my last thought at night was a prayer that I not wake in this same world in the morning.
