At one time, over a period of years, I was subject to an easily upset stomach. Sometimes this distress would last for a period of a day or more, often accompanied by a headache and leaving me feeling quite weak. As I progressed in my study of Christian Science, I realized this imposition was just that—an imposition. When next this claim surfaced, I quickly referred to (and obeyed) this instruction by Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (p. 495): "When the illusion of sickness or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and His idea. Allow nothing but His likeness to abide in your thought."

I dwelt on the fact that in truth I was God's idea and reasoned that as such—as man—I was "pure and upright, whole and free," in the words of Hymn No. 12 from the Christian Science Hymnal. As I held to this thought, the false view that there were two of me—one miserable and wretched, the other spiritual and perfect—gradually faded, until finally Truth won out. I was entirely free. I have not had a repeat of this problem.

On page 598 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy says: "One moment of divine consciousness, or the spiritual understanding of Life and Love, is a foretaste of eternity. This exalted view, obtained and retained when the Science of being is understood, would bridge over with life discerned spiritually the interval of death, and man would be in the full consciousness of his immortality and eternal harmony, where sin, sickness, and death are unknown."
