FOR CHILDREN
The colt
[Original in Spanish]
One morning Juan and Romulo got up earlier than usual to see if their father's favorite mare had dropped her foal. Before they got to the corral, the foreman caught up with them and said, "Mara had a colt last night, but he's very weak and won't live."
Juan, the smaller boy, said: "I think you must be wrong. You know God really makes everything good, including His creatures. And God doesn't make sickness."
The foreman went on: "He was born hours ago, but he can't get on his legs to nurse; they aren't strong enough. In cases like this, the foals always die."
Romulo didn't agree. "Well, that doesn't have to be true, because we learn in our Christian Science Sunday School that God keeps everything in order. He has all power and can help the foal. We're going to talk with Mom and Dad."
Mother and Father told the boys they were right about the foal being cared for by God.
Then Mother read out loud from the Bible: "And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good." Gen. 1:25.
"Listen to Mrs. Eddy's words," Father said. "'God creates all forms of reality. His thoughts are spiritual realities'; and, 'All of God's creatures, moving in the harmony of Science, are harmless, useful, indestructible.'" Science and Health, pp. 513, 514.
When the reading was ended, they stayed a moment to pray and think about what they had just heard. They talked about the perfection of everything made by God, and they knew for sure that all of His creatures are healthy and strong.
Then Juan shouted, "Let's go see the little colt!" and he and Romulo ran outside, followed by their parents.
They headed straight for the corral. There was Mara nursing her young one. The colt was steady, standing on his strong legs just the way he should.
The foreman came over, smiling, and said: "I have to admit you boys were right. The colt is going to be fine; he looks pretty strong now. I've learned something today."
