I was first attracted to Christian Science not for healing, but...

I was first attracted to Christian Science not for healing, but because I had some friends who were Christian Scientists. When I asked my friends to tell me more about this teaching, I was given a copy of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I was greatly taken with the chapter titled "Prayer." Later, when I had reached page 207, I read these words: "There is but one primal cause. Therefore there can be no effect from any other cause, and there can be no reality in aught which does not proceed from this great and only cause." I felt that this was an indisputable statement. From that time on, my study of Christian Science became more serious and I became increasingly convinced of the truths I read in the textbook.

I joined The Mother Church. But because I was living so far from a branch church and seemed to be so busy as a working farmer, joining a branch church was not seriously contemplated at that time. Later I married a Christian Scientist who lived the truths of this religion, and divine Science became a bigger part of my life.

Soon after my marriage I had occasion to enlist the help of a Christian Science practitioner. There was a small but persistent ulcer on my ear, and some friends were expressing concern about it. This was the first time I had had help from a practitioner. I kept looking at the sore and expecting it to disappear. Finally I mentioned this to the practitioner and was told that I was making a reality of the difficulty by inspecting it. I was encouraged, in my prayer, to look into the "mirror of Spirit" and see my real selfhood as God's spiritual, perfect reflection. Around that time I noticed that a condition of hemorrhoids from which I had suffered simply disappeared. Many important lessons were learned, and the result was a complete healing of the sore on my ear and much spiritual growth.
