Near the end of the summer, between my first and second year...
Near the end of the summer, between my first and second year of college, an insect bite on my shinbone became seriously infected.
Since childhood I had attended Christian Science Sunday School. There I had learned to trust in God's healing power, as demonstrated by Christ Jesus and explained scientifically in Christian Science. I loved everything I had learned thus far, so it was very natural for me to seek help from the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.
In view of my need for healing, I wanted time alone in which to read Science and Health from beginning to end before returning to my busy college schedule. For this reason I was grateful to accept an invitation from my mother and her sister-in-law, both Christian Scientists, to go with them to a house in the mountains for two weeks, where I would be alone most of the time.
