At one time I had a heart condition, which so frightened me that when going to bed I used to wonder whether I would be alive in the morning. I found some comfort through prayer, but the problem persisted.

One evening the idea came to look up references to heart in a Bible concordance. I did, and the first sentence I read was this one spoken by Christ Jesus (Matt. 6:21), "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." The effect of this statement was quickening, and I said to myself, "I know where my heart is; it's with God." This conviction filled me with deep gratitude and an even greater love for God. Suddenly I had a feeling of well-being and knew that I was healed. There has been no recurrence of the heart trouble.

At that time I had already been a keen student of Christian Science for close to forty years. Through intensive study of it I had come to realize that nothing ungodlike—such as sin, disease, and death—has real power or authority. Mary Baker Eddy's first sentence in the Preface of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings," has always been a great source of comfort and help. For well over fifty years now, all my needs have been met solely through Christian Science. Rheumatism in both knees, which had lasted for six years, and fallen arches, which had caused pain and required supports, have both been healed. As a result I was able to resume activities like playing tennis, hiking, and gardening. And a feeling that life wasn't worth living just faded away through reading Science and Health.
